E ADATTATA 11889 (LM-67 R) - GENOVA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR MEDS-02/A LANGUAGE Italian TEACHING LOCATION GENOVA SEMESTER 1° Semester MODULES Questo insegnamento è un modulo di: PHYSIOPATHOLOGICAL ASPECTS AT VARIOUS AGES OF LIFE TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The goal of teaching is to deepen the skills regarding the pathophysiological processes at different stages of life, in relation to the main systems, with particular attention to the cardiovascular, neuromotor, and endocrine systems. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The main purpose of the course is to provide students with basic knowledge on the etiology and pathogenetic mechanisms of diseases in humans, as well as the mechanisms of tissue response to damage: inflammation, shelter and adaptive immunity. Attendance at lectures and individual study will allow the student a) to know the causes of human diseases, b) to recognize the different responses of adaptation to damage, c) to describe and classify inflammatory responses and d) to describe and classify tumors. TEACHING METHODS The course consists of 16 hours of lectures covering all the program topics. The teachers illustrate the topics through PowerPoint presentations, which are shared on the Aula Web platform. Teachers always recommend using a reference textbook to properly prepare for the exam. Attendance is mandatory. SYLLABUS/CONTENT Cellular pathology: etiopathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Tumors: metaplasia, dysplasia, anaplasia. Classification and characteristics of malignancy. Staging and grading systems. Chemical, physical, and biological carcinogenesis. Metabolism and activation of carcinogens. Initiation, promotion, progression. Invasiveness and metastasis. Oncogenes and tumor suppressors. Notes on tumor markers. Inflammation: Innate immunity and acute and chronic inflammatory response. ASSESSMENT METHODS Assessment of learning is achieved through the final exam only, which aims to ascertain the student's actual achievement of the expected learning outcomes. To pass the exam, students must achieve a grade of at least 18/30. The following factors contribute to the final grade, expressed out of 30: Ability to critically address the required topics.
