OVERVIEW

The tools for protecting population health: addressing the challenges of prevention and healthcare organization, from the determinants of health to health policy.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Protection and promotion of health in a public health framework. Epidemiology and the prevention of infectious diseases and not in relation to the living and working environment (housing hygiene, school hygiene, hospital hygiene, etc), the social environment and lifestyle. Hygiene of food and nutrition. Health organization and planning. Medicine in the community.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Students will have acquired knowledge of the main determinants of health and disease, as well as the fundamentals of epidemiology, prevention, and health promotion. They will understand the principles of environmental, food, and occupational health, strategies for the control of infectious and chronic diseases, immunization programs, and the major biological, chemical, and physical risk factors affecting human health. Students will be able to interpret epidemiological data and health indicators, assess risks to individual and population health, and apply evidence-based prevention principles. They will also understand the organization, planning, and evaluation of health and social care services. Finally, students will be able to contribute to the design and implementation of health education, health promotion, and continuity-of-care interventions, operating according to principles of quality, effectiveness, and appropriateness in healthcare prescribing and service delivery.

TEACHING METHODS

Any Student with documented Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or with any special needs, shall reach out to the Lecturer(s) and to the dedicated SLD Representative in the Department before class begins, in order to liase and arrange the specific teaching methods and ensure proper achievement of the learning aims and outcomes.

The course will be delivered through classroom-based plenary lectures.

 

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

  • Determinants of health
  • Role of deprivation determinants and their impact on community health
  • Main reservoirs and sources of infection, host–parasite interactions
  • Notification, quarantine measures, and diagnostic assessment
  • Sterilization, disinfection, sanitation, and pest control
  • Active and passive immunoprophylaxis. Types of vaccines. Vaccination prevention strategies. The vaccination schedule
  • Chemioprophylaxis of infectious diseases
  • Epidemiology and prevention of infectious diseases according transmission pathway, with particular reference to HPV infection
  • Epidemiology and prevention of chronic diseases, international migrants’ diseases, chronic degenerative diseases, atherosclerosis, and ischemic heart disease; primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention of degenerative and metabolic diseases
  • Evidence-based prevention, evaluation of the effectiveness of preventive interventions
  • Methodology for planning, implementing, and evaluating health education interventions
  • Epidemiology and prevention of road traffic and home injuries
  • Natural disasters and health emergencies
  • Health and environmental effects caused by pollution; monitoring and risk assessment
  • Epidemiology and prevention of environmental damage caused by major atmospheric pollutants
  • Biological, physical, and chemical risk factors present in confined spaces
  • Water intended for human consumption: risk assessment and prevention
  • Risks to health resulting from the disposal and treatment of urban and industrial waste
  • Identification and assessment of risks in work environments due to biological, physical, and chemical factors
  • Prevention of environmental damage associated with the workplace
  • Occupational hygiene: functions of preventive medicine and prevention and protection services
  • Foods as vehicles of disease: infections, toxins, intoxications
  • Food safety. Physical, chemical and microbiological control methods: adulteration, sophistication, counterfeiting; food additives;Food hygiene
  • Epidemiology and prevention of alcoholism and smoking
  • Epidemiology and prevention of dependencies
  • Health organization and planning: relationship between needs, demand, and supply; health plans and integrated networks
  • Hospital organization and community health services. The hospital discharge form (SDO)
  • Public and private healthcare
  • Planning and operational systems; information systems
  • Organization of home healthcare services
  • Organization of services specific to individuals with disabilities, the elderly, and disadvantaged groups
  • Activation of participation by individuals, families, and communities in health protection
  • Basic health sciences; patient education and counselling
  • Assessment of the effectiveness of interventions in primary care: application of indications derived from EBM (Evidence-Based Medicine)
  • Methodologies for integration between hospitals and community-based services
