OVERVIEW

The course generalises the concept of structural design from a deterministic to a probabilistic viewpoint. Compliance to requirements is no more assessed by comparison of representative values of loads and resistance, but on the basis of the probability of crisis of the structure (according to the various definitions of crisis) and, possibly, of the inherent consequences.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

This teaching unit aims at providing the student with the base elements of the probability theory and of inferential statistics, in order to enable the use of simple predictive models with practical interest and the comprehension of physical problems expressed in a probabilistic format. The general concept is particularised to structural analysis, introducing the concept of structural reliability and the procedures for evaluating the structural safety and developing risk analyses

PREREQUISITES

The student shall possess the knowledge needed to understand the principles of structural assessment

The module of Probability and Statistics is to be followed and exam passed before the module of Structural Safety.
