OVERVIEW

The course provides the theoretical and practical foundations for the study of fluid machinery, energy systems and marine propulsion. It also covers computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques for the modeling and analysis of fluid flows in the maritime field. Through lectures and practical exercises, students will develop critical analysis skills related to the operation of propulsion systems and the interpretation of numerical simulation results.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The teaching unit provides students with the fundamental skills needed to understand and analyse processes and technologies related to fluid machines, thermal systems and energy conversion.

PREREQUISITES

Basic and applied thermodynamics are prerequisites for a thorough understanding of the physical and technical aspects covered in this course.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

For details on the examination methods, students are referred to the individual course modules. The final grade for the course will be calculated as the weighted average of the marks obtained in the two modules that make up the course.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The assessment consists of one examination for each of the two course modules, structured as follows:

MACHINERY:
The assessment consists of an oral examination designed to evaluate the student's level of knowledge and their ability to identify the fundamental principles underlying the design and operation of fluid machinery and energy systems. The examination will also assess the appropriate use of technical and scientific terminology, as well as the understanding of the capabilities and limitations of theoretical models within their specific fields of application.

CFD FOR ENERGY SYSTEMS:
The assessment consists of an oral discussion focused on the critical analysis of the exercises and projects carried out during the course, with the aim of evaluating the student's understanding of CFD applications to fluid machinery components and energy systems in the maritime sector. The oral examination will also include a question on the theoretical topics covered during the lectures, in order to assess both the student's overall knowledge and their ability to critically analyze problems related to numerical simulation and modeling.
