OVERVIEW

The course provides advanced knowledge of electric traction systems, with emphasis on electric drives and power electronics. It develops skills in modeling and control of electromechanical systems, considering adhesion constraints, energy efficiency, and integration with railway power supply systems. The course also introduces the role of electrified mobility in sustainable development, addressing performance, energy consumption, and environmental impact. Specific features of railway systems and basic aspects of transport planning for local public mobility are also covered.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The teaching has the aim of analysing the main features of the guided transport systems, with particular with particular reference to propulsion systems, power systems, signalling systems and to reference standard.

The course provides advanced knowledge of electric traction systems, focusing on electric drives, power electronics, and control of electromechanical systems. Students will acquire skills in modeling, control (FOC, DTC), and performance analysis of traction systems, considering adhesion limits, energy efficiency, and integration with railway power networks.

The course also introduces transport economics, regulations, and planning, enabling students to assess technological, operational, and environmental impacts of mobility systems, including local public transport and integrated urban and extra-urban services.

Graduates will be able to critically evaluate technological and control solutions, participate in the design and management of transport infrastructures and services, and communicate technical concepts effectively in multidisciplinary contexts.

PREREQUISITES

Basic knowledge of automatic controls, power converters and electrical machines and drives.

TEACHING METHODS

Theoretical lectures, numerical exercises, and simulation activities. Attendance is absolutely recommended.

  • Control techniques for electric drives (FOC, DTC)
  • Traction control and adhesion regulation
  • Electric and regenerative braking
  • Multi-system traction vehicles
  • Sustainable mobility and local public transport: economic characteristics of the sector, regulatory framework, transport network design, service planning and management, infrastructure planning, performance indicators (efficiency and effectiveness), and environmental impact assessment methods
  • Technologies for sustainable mobility and transport systems
  • Applications in road and rail transport: charging infrastructures, autonomous driving, and innovative driverless systems
  • Operational aspects and Life Cycle Cost (LCC) analysis
  • European railway systems: network structure, interoperability, signalling systems, and ETCS/ERTMS

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Details on how to prepare for the exam and on the degree of depth of each topic will be given during the lectures. The exam will focus on all the topics covered both during the lectures and during the exercises and will allow us to verify the knowledge of the theory taught and the ability to correctly formulate even complex problems and set their solution.
