AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The Restoration module and the Workshop as a whole aim to provide participants with the skills and abilities necessary to:

1. correctly use references to the current cultural and disciplinary debate on restoration, doctrinal documents, and national and international regulatory texts on protection, conservation, and restoration to justify project objectives and choices for proper and feasible development;

2. select and monitor, in a scientifically rigorous and professionally effective manner, the use of direct and indirect non-destructive architectural analysis and diagnosis techniques, with particular attention to: rigorous architectural and geometric surveys, analysis of indirect and documentary sources for the history of the artifact, archaeological analysis of the built environment, examination of the technological and constructional material components of artifacts, chemical, physical, technological, and mechanical characterization of the materials used in them, recognition and diagnosis of processes and phenomena of material degradation and of the deficiency or failure of construction elements and mechanisms of structural failure;

3. Prepare accurate and rigorous summary reports of the analytical and diagnostic phases (thematic maps, diagnostic tables, reports, themes, etc.) to communicate and justify project choices;

4. Select and utilize, consistent with the project objectives, the most appropriate and effective intervention techniques to address conservation, degradation, and hygiene, plant, and technological deficiencies identified during the preliminary analysis of the artifacts selected by the teaching staff as test sites;

5. Prepare, according to professional standards and in compliance with applicable regulations, illustrative technical and administrative documents for the final restoration project of the artifact being tested.

TEACHING METHODS

Teaching activities include:

1. Lectures and seminars, including those involving external experts from universities, research, the professional world, businesses, conservation institutions, and local and regional authorities.

2. Field surveys and non-destructive analysis of the building/architectural complex chosen as a case study, assessing its physical and material, spatial and formal consistency, its conditions of conservation, stability, health, and use;

3. Development of a project for its conservation, restoration, compatible use, and enhancement, through classroom group work, with ongoing assessment by faculty and external critics.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The specific contents of the Restoration Module are instrumental in achieving the general educational objectives of the Workshop and, therefore, concern, in summary:

1. the history of the building/complex chosen by the instructor, in consultation with the conservation authorities or administrations of the entities involved in its restoration, and which will be communicated at the beginning of the teaching activities;

2. the survey of this building/architectural complex, using rigorous longimetric, topographic, laser-scanner, and photogrammetric techniques;

3. Analysis of its architectural and spatial characteristics, its material consistency, and its construction features

4. Analysis and diagnosis of its conservation conditions

5. Intervention techniques for conservation and restoration 6. Installation and technological interventions

7. Functional and usage design, with references to similar cases, including international ones

8. Software methods and tools for archiving and managing various types of data acquired throughout the entire analytical-diagnostic and design process (GIS, QGIS, HBIM, AI).

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The final exam for the Laboratory is a single one and will consist of the submission of study and project materials related to the year's topic and their oral and public presentation, in front of the teachers of all modules and colleagues.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The assessment of learning and the effective acquisition of the skills and abilities required will take place through intermediate checks during the year, individually and for working groups, of the studies in progress and of the analytical-diagnostic and design documents being prepared, as well as during the examination, with collective and individual exposure and discussion of the final papers, in the presence of external critics.
