OVERVIEW

The course provides the principles and methods of submarine design, integrating aspects of naval architecture, ship construction, and marine systems engineering, with particular emphasis on translating operational requirements into design requirements. The objective is to develop the ability to analyse operational needs, define the corresponding requirements, and formulate a preliminary concept design consistent with the required operational performance.

AIMS AND CONTENT

PREREQUISITES

Students are expected to have a basic background in naval engineering, particularly in the three core areas of naval architecture, ship structures, and marine systems.

TEACHERS AND EXAM BOARD

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam consists of:

  • development of a submarine concept design, carried out individually or in small groups and documented in a written report;

  • presentation and discussion of the project with the instructors;

  • individual oral examination, consisting of 2–3 open questions on the topics covered during the course.

The final assessment considers the quality and consistency of the design solutions developed, the ability to justify the choices made, and the mastery of the theoretical and methodological knowledge related to submarine design.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The development of a submarine concept design allows verification of the student’s ability to identify design requirements starting from an operational need, to perform the preliminary sizing of platform systems and structural components, and to compare and justify different design solutions in relation to the assigned requirements.

The oral examination assesses the ability to discuss and explain theoretical aspects, as well as the principles and methodologies of submarine design.
