AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, the student will be able to: 

  • describe the principles and methodologies of submarine design, with reference to platform systems and structural aspects;  

  • analyse an operational requirement and derive the main design requirements for a submarine;  

  • carry out preliminary sizing of the main platform systems based on the specified requirements;  

  • carry out preliminary sizing of the structural components of a submarine based on operational conditions and design requirements;  

  • evaluate and compare alternative design solutions with respect to operational, performance, and technical requirements;  

  • develop a preliminary submarine concept design by integrating requirements, platform systems, and structural aspects. 

TEACHING METHODS

The course is delivered through theoretical lectures, guest lectures from industry experts, as well as practical activities, and guided exercises.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The syllabus of Module II covers the structural and onboard systems aspects of submarine design, including the following general topics: 

  • Operational needs and analysis of operational requirements;  

  • Structural design and preliminary sizing;  

  • Air-independent propulsion (AIP), onboard power generation, and electrical distribution systems;  

  • Ballast and trim control systems;  

  • Safety and escape systems.

Specific indications on reference bibliography will be provided by the professor at the beginning of the lectures
