OVERVIEW

Providing in-depth knowledge on main classes of drugs and on their use as a therapeutic tools, on cellular and molecular mechanisms of the drug action, and on the pharmacological modulation of cell responses. in-depth knowledge of pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics and adverse drug reaction and toxicity of the main drug classes. Therapeutic perspectives and rationals to design new drugs for selective intervention on cellular and molecular mechanisms

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

TEACHING METHODS

The course consists of a total of 48 hours of lessons.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Introductory remarks on intercellular communication in the nervous system: the neurotransmission; regulation of neurotransmission. The vesicular exocytotic cycle and toxins

 

CHOLINERGIC SYSTEM – ADRENERGIC SYSTEM

Synthesis and catabolism of neurotransmitters; cholinergic and noradrenergic transmission in central nervous system and autonomic nervous system

 

DRUGS OF THE AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM  

Cholinomimetic drugs and anticholinergic drugs: mechanisms of action and effects, side effects, therapeutic uses

Sympathomimetic and alpha and beta-adrenergic receptor antagonists: mechanisms of action and effects, side effects, therapeutic uses

Ganglioplegic drugs: mechanisms of action and effects, adverse drug reaction, therapeutic uses

Neuromuscular-blocking drugs: mechanisms of action and effects, side effects, therapeutic uses

DRUGS FOR ISCHEMIC HEART DISEASE. Introductory remarks on pathophysiology of coronary blood flow dysfunction and ischemic cardiopathy; potential targets for pharmacological intervention.

Drug for chest pain: mechanisms of action and effects, side effects, therapeutic uses.

 

DIURETICS. Mechanisms of action and effects, side effects, therapeutic uses. New targets for diuretic agents; research and development of new drugs

 

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS. Vascular tone and antihypertensive drugs. Contraction of the smooth muscle cells: control of muscular tone and pharmacological modulation of vascular tone.

Vascular smooth muscle and control of the vascular tone; vasodilators

 

ANTIASTHMATIC DRUGS. Bronchial smooth muscle. bronchodilators and antiasthmatic drugs: mechanisms of action and effects, side effects, therapeutic uses. New targets for diuretic agents; research and development of new drugs.
