Advanced course on fluid mechanics.
The course aims to provide students with the basic knowledge necessary to address the study of motion of bodies in viscous fluids. The course describes the equations for the motion of fluids, as well as relevant models for marine hydrodynamics.

Continuous medium. Fluid properties. Fluid kinematics. The stress tensor. Cardinal flow equations. Boundary conditions. Viscous fluid dynamics: NavierStokes equations. Unidirectional flows. Basics of vorticity dynamics. High Reynolds number flows. Inviscid fluid dynamics: Bernoulli theorem. Irrotational flows. D'Alembert paradox. Kutta Joukowsky's theorem. Conformal mapping. Boundary layers: concepts, governing equations and interpretations. Turbulence: mean flow equations. The closure problem and Boussinesq assuption. Turbulence models. Forces on immersed bodies: Lift, form drag, viscous drag, added mass.
