MODULES Questo insegnamento è un modulo di:

OVERVIEW

The module provides the students with the fundamental skills to interpret the processes, as well as the technologies, related to fluid machines, thermal machines and energy conversion systems. This allows the student to master the basic principles of thermodynamics and fluid dynamics when applied to the design and the analysis of energy conversion equipment, as well as to address the functional behavior of fluid machines both in themselves and when components of power systems.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The module of “Fluid and Thermal Machines”, integrated with that of “Technical Physics”, aims to provide students with the skills needed for bringing them to interpret the functional processes, and the basic design configurations, related to Energy Conversion Machines (ECM), i.e. fluid machines, thermal machines and power plants. To this end, the students will be given the opportunity to master the basic principles of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics applied to ECM’s as well as to address and resolve application problems inherent in the operation and use of ECM’s, both in themselves and as components of power plants. Albeit at a basic level, they are also given the notions useful to conduct assessments of energy efficiency and environmental impact today so important in engineering applications of thermal machines and power systems.

TEACHING METHODS

Thanks to the rich availability of in-Campus dedicated laboratories and infrastructures, including fully-instrumented thermal machines and energy conversion systems (even of industrial-size), the course can take advantage of classroom lessons suitably complemented by laboratory activities with direct power plant monitoring and advanced process-simulation numerical activities.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

After an introduction about the sources of energy, the module lays the conceptual foundations and functional properties of Energy Conversion Machines (ECM’s) intended both in themselves and as components of systems for energy conversion and power production. Particular attention is paid to the typological features of ECM’s as well as to the foundations of fluid-dynamics, thermo-dynamics and energy thermo-chemical processes of interest, in order to achieve the best conversion efficiencies and to limit as much as possible the related environmental impacts. The course includes a significant laboratory work with experimental exercises on fluid machines, internal combustion engines and power plants.

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

  1. Course notes prepared by the teacher.
  2. G. Cornetti: “Macchine idrauliche”, “Macchine termiche – Tomo A”, “Macchine termiche - Tomo B” , Ed. Il Capitello, Torino (several copies of the text are available at the Library of the Savona Campus)

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The examination includes a written test and an oral evaluation. The written test takes on considerable importance in addressing the oral examination and in determining the overall grade.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The written test, which lasts one hour, consists of 5 questions requiring answers more conceptual (i.e. more addressed at verifying the overall preparation) than operational (such as resolution of problems).
