The course aims at equipping students with a basic knowledge of the law of the sea and a capacity of critical analysis of the main implications thereof.
The seas and the oceans represent a resource of growing importance in various crucial areas of State action, including transports, fisheries, energy production. More and more pressing is, in addition, the furtherance of related general interests such as safety of navigation and marine environmental protection. The subject, taught in English, offers the possibility to focus on these topics in the double perspective of international and European Union law.
The course consists of 36 hours of lectures given by the course holder. It is held in English and is based on the exam in the classroom of the main legal instruments that exist in international and European Union law. During the lecturing period some real cases decided by the International Court of Justice, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, the Court of Justice of the European Union and international arbitral tribunals will also be examined with a view to conduct focussed discussions to which students will be required to actively participate. Teaching materials will be made available on the University portal www.aulaweb.unige.it. For a better organisation of the teaching activities students are required to register on the website as soon as possible. In order to facilitate the discussion, the calendar of the lectures will be published in advance and all relevant documents will be uploaded on the University portal.
Aim of the course is to equip students with fundamental notions of the law of the sea with particular regard to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, other international law instruments relating to specific issues and problems and the pertinent case law of the International Court of Justice, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and other judicial organs. A further aim shall be to stimulate the critical abilities of students with regard to the relations and links between international law of the sea and other disciplines (international environmental law, energy law, migration law) and to the ever-increasing role, in the area, of the European Union.

The timetable of the lectures will be made available one month in advance on the dedicated websites of the Department of Law(http://giurisprudenza.unige.it/node/505) and Political Science (http://www.aulescienzesociali.unige.it/orari/scpol_cds.php).
For regularly attending students (at least 75% of the lectures) the verification of the knowledge acquired shall be verified through classroom discussions on assigned topics and a written or oral test based on multiple choice and/or open questions. Such results may be further verified on the occasion of an oral exam. Non-regularly attending students will have to pass an oral exam. The examination panel shall be designated by the Department Council and shall be chaired by the course holder. The duration is, normally, of 15 minutes and the exam is based on the discussion of at least three different topics.
The presence of the students in class shall be verified by requiring a signature or by roll call.
