The alterations of structures, functions and control mechanisms in degenerative pathologies as well as in neoplastic transformations will be studied at molecular, cellular and tissue level. Students will be able to use and apply this knowledge both in research activity and in clinical laboratory AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The deep knowledge of molecular mechanisms underlying the loss of homeostatic ability in tissues and the pathogenesis of the main human pathologies is fundamental for the students and will be crucial in stutent's research activity and in clinical laboratory activity as well. PREREQUISITES In-depht knowledge in biochemistry, human anatomy and physiology is fundamental to approach the course. TEACHING METHODS 48 hours of lectures and seminars SYLLABUS/CONTENT Cell adaptations: modifications of cell growth and differentiation. Atrophy, hypoplasia, hypertrophy, metaplasia. Cell injury: hypoxic/ischemic damage, chemical damage, free radical damage. Cellular responses to stress: alteration of lysosoms, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, cytoskeleton. Cell death: necrosis/apoptosis Cell and tissue degenerations: primary dysfunctions/intracellular accumulations/extracellular accumulations/pathological pigmentations. Liver pathologies: Steatosis, Fibrosis, Cirrhosis Hemosiderosis, Wilson Disease. Amyloidosis Atherosclerosis: pathogenesis and sequelae Hemostasis and thrombosis Bleeding diathesis: congenital and acquider disorders. CID Vascular pathologies: edema, embolism, thrombosis, infarction, shock Anemias (congenital and acquired), leucopoenia, leukocytosis, leukaemia Diabetes: pathogenesis and sequelae Nervous system pathologies: epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, tetanus (overview) Parkinson Disease and Alzheimer Disease: histological features and pathogenetic mechanisms Neoplasia: Tumor atypias. To get a passing-grade for each question is mandatory to pass the exam. The final evaluation will take into account student ability to analyse in depht the topics, to use the specialistic vocabulary and to logically connect different aspects of molecular pathology.
