OVERVIEW

The course offer the opportunity to   learn the pathogenesis, morphology, and cell and molecular biology of human diseases and laboratory techniques used to study them.  

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Clinical Pathology combines the theoretical and technical knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, genetics, clinical chemistry, immunology, microbiology, hematology, histocompatibility, cellular pathology and other fields as they pertain to the diagnosis, monitoring, and prevention of disease. The student can reach  a basic knowledge  on several  aspects of biomedical sciences 

TEACHING METHODS

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Introduction to the course, laboratory tests performed in routine and in emergency, the quality control.

Biological causes of variation in results

Complete Blood Count:  hematocrit ; analytical parameters of white and red blood cells, platelets

Protein electrophoresis (serum, urine samples)

acute phase proteins, Erythrocyte sedimentation rate

anemia, polycythemia, Bone Marrow Disorders Leukemia Lymphomas leukocytosis

markers of myocardial damage

Enzymology clinical diagnostics laboratory in the course of common  liver diseases, jaundice, hepatitis and cirrhosis. Pancreas diseases and cholestasis

biochemical markers of metabolism iron and cupper.

The clinical laboratory in the control of glycaemia

Analysis of urine: physical chemistry, examination of the sediment,

Evaluation of renal function

haemorhagic and thrombosis diathesis

Tumor markers and panels of interest in oncology diagnostic

analyisis of liquor

homocysteine as risk marker

EXAM DESCRIPTION

oral examination:  the student will have to answer correctly 3 questions regarding the exam. to pass the examination, a sufficient response will be required for each of the 3 covered topics

ASSESSMENT METHODS

For the final evaluation, the committee will evaluate the following requirements: level of knowledge of the subjects covered by the questions, exposure skills, reasoning and the ability  to connect to  topics discussed in the course, as well those of related preparatory courses of the  degree.
