AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Attendance and participation in the proposed training activities and individual study will allow the student to:
have a basic knowledge of the structure of the various classes of materials;
understand the correlation between structure, microstructure, properties and applications;
know the different types of materials, with particular attention to the materials used for implant devices and those used in the operating room
provide the necessary elements to understand the durability of the materials and the corrosion of the metallic materials in order to ensure correct use, conservation and maintenance

TEACHING METHODS

Frontal theoretical lessons, in presence or through distance learning using the Teams platform, according to the indications of the University.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

1.Metallic materials: Metallic bond, Crystalline grains, crystalline structures, reticular planes,  stress-strain curve, elastic modulus. Point defects, Dislocations. Strengthening mechanisms in metal alloys, hardness. Examples of metal alloys for biomedical use.
2. Mechanical properties of materials: Brittle fracture. Tenacity and Resilience, definition of KIc, Griffith theory.
3. Corrosion of metallic materials, anodic and cathodic reactions, passivation, polarization curves. Corrosion forms: crack corrosion and fretting corrosion.
4. Polymeric materials: polymerization mechanisms, structure, molecular weight, degree of crystallinity. Examples of polymers used in the biomedical field: Silicones, Polyurethanes, Polyesters, Polycarbonates and polyamides. Gas permeability Mechanical properties, Viscoelasticity, Fracture: crazing and fatigue.

5. Ceramic materials:  forming and sintering process. Mechanical properties. Examples and characteristics of ceramic materials used in the biomedical field: zirconia, alumina, turbostrate carbon.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The final exam consists of an oral test with the aim of evaluating the achievement of the training objectives. Two questions will be asked during the test. The first will focus on a topic chosen by the candidate, the second will focus on a topic chosen by the examiner.

Students with SLD, disability or other special educational needs certification are advised to contact the teacher at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching and exam methods that, in compliance with the teaching objectives, take into account the modalities learning opportunities and provide suitable compensatory tools.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

They contribute to evaluation .
• Ability to deal transversally and critically with the topics requested;
• Fairness, clarity, synthesis and fluidity of the exhibition;
• Adoption of appropriate terminology
To obtain the maximum marks (30/30) with the possible honors, the knowledge / skills of the subject must be excellent.
