AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Provide students with the basic elements of the fishing techniques of the most important marine species from a commercial point of view. Provide the basis of the analysis methods of the fish stocks used for a correct management of the resources.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to familiarize students with the observation, conducted with a critical spirit, of the evolution that has occurred over time about the human use of marine resources, an activity that has led to the current general condition of overfishing of fish resources in relation both to the growing food demand of the world human population and to the need to maintain an adequate standard of living for fishery workers.
During the lectures, all the members of the class, protagonists of the learning process, are asked to present their knowledge / experiences on the topics covered. At the end of the meeting, the student, based on the multiplicity of previous knowledge and the different interpretations expressed by the class, will be able to constructively and subjectively re-elaborate the general information provided by the teacher.
At the end of the course, the desired habit of dealing with the multiple aspects of a problem / phenomenon from different points of view, through the formulation of more and more detailed self-queries, will allow the student to proceed independently to the analysis and to the prior assessment of the positive or negative consequences / alterations that human activities in the fishery and aquaculture sectors can produce in the marine aquatic ecosystem.

TEACHING METHODS

The course includes lectures with the active participation of the class members who, through the prior consultation of the teaching material already uploaded in aulaweb, can be informed in advance about the topics addressed at each meeting, thus having the opportunity to organize a personal mind map on the subject under discussion.
The laboratory foresees the morpho-physiological analysis of blue fish samples. It is also foreseen, if allowed by the weather and sea conditions, the observation at sea of the catch activity of the blue fish. Thematic analyzes and group work are not excluded, even in relation to the preparation of the final exam.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The evolution over time of the relationship between Man fisherman / Fishery resource: demographic increase, anthropic impact, environmental alterations, sustainable development.
The fishing activity in the world, in the Mediterranean, in Italy. The trades (terminology and regulations) and the tools (structure and methods of use). Pelagic resources and their monitoring. The stock assessment. Recognition of fish species. Some of the most important exploited species (cod, bluefin tuna, swordfish). The cephalopods. Cetaceans. Aquaculture and mariculture. Non-food resources: red coral. Management interventions: artificial barriers. The Anisakis.

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

The teaching material is provided directly by the teacher in the form of power point lessons.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam is oral and includes the autonomous creation of a final presentation / essay on a topic chosen by the student and the answer to questions asked by the teacher on topics covered in class.
At the end of the educational path, which provides the student as a central figure, the examiner will be able to present, with the correct use of the specialized vocabulary, his own assessments on the health status of a fish stock or on a capture activity, sampling, breeding by choice, providing autonomously the creation of a final presentation / essay with particular reference to the sustainability of the activity, to the possible consequences of the anthropic impact and to the possible interventions of protection / exploitation of resources.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Verification of the achievement of the educational objectives of the course through questions related to the program actually carried out during the lessons of the course. In-depth presentation is required on one of the topics of the program chosen by the student.
The final in-depth presentation, in addition to allowing the teacher to evaluate the learning achieved by the student, through appropriate questions concerning the program actually carried out and the subject covered in the presentation, will further have the purpose of representing a test case for the examiner for the synthetic and scientifically correct exposition of its critical reasoning in front of a qualified audience and, moreover, for the fellow students present at the examination, it could represent a further educational moment.
