OVERVIEW

Good interior design is more than what it looks like. It's about making sure the human experience is at the center. It's about talking about well-being and how to make life better - not just for us, but for others and the environment. Man is not an island.

Furniture Product Design introduces students to the complex world of Interior Design and guides them toward understanding the cultural, methodological, and technical-instrumental elements that underlie the culture of interior design.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The objective of this course is to approach the issues related to designing interior spaces by assuming the set of relational components that come into play between people and living spaces, with particular attention to the themes of perception, sensoriality and the experiential dimension that these spaces evoke. Space, light, matter, color and objects: the way we perceive them and interact with them determines our experience in the environments following some rules that are the basis of our living.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Attending the lectures, participating in the group exercises, engaging in individual study and completing the suggested readings will allow students to:
- have knowledge of and effectively deal with the various issues of contemporary interior design;
- be able to read and define the main living spaces;
- be able to apply the knowledge acquired and use the necessary tools aimed at designing a living space in detail, taking into account the control of light, the role of color, the characteristics of various materials, the ergonomics of forms, as well as sustainability and well-being.

PREREQUISITES

To follow the class it is necessary to have the basic knowledge of representation especially through freehand drawing, technical drawing and the creation of three-dimensional environments.

TEACHING METHODS

The teaching is structured in two different ways: a module reserved for frontal lessons of theoretical study, and another reserved for classroom activities of research, processing of exercises and reviews. The work in the classroom considered to be essential training moment. It is required to acquire specific skills for working in groups. The project groups should be 2/3 people maximum.

Students will be asked to discuss their work both in individual and collective reviews in which they will have to illustrate and argue in front of the whole class the work done. This is considered a fundamental formative moment for teaching.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The teaching program addressed to future designers starts from theoretical insights on the evolution of contemporary living analyzed by single thematic strands: functional environments, light, color, textures, interior elements, design.

From a practical point of view, there will be two exercises to be carried out in groups:

the first allows students to deepen the design of a specific living space down to the smallest detail by crossing all the different elements that make it up. The exercise is aimed at understanding the scope of the project related to interior design and knowledge of the technical specifications to support the design and the tools necessary for proper design of interior spaces both from the functional point of view that from the aesthetic-formal;

the second is aimed at setting up a micro space dedicated to minimal living in which to experience the essentiality of living and the relationship of man in space. The exercise involves a research process in support of the project, in which the student can develop attitudes to negotiation, teambuilding, leadership and conflict management.

The final presentation puts together the assignments given during the teaching. Students will be evaluated on the basis of the quality of the exercises and the project and the developing of design attitudes.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

At the exam, each student will present his/her own path, that is, the exercises carried out complete with all the papers produced during the lessons.  He/she will also have to discuss his/her own path individually, in the light of the theoretical-operational contents developed during the semester.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

1_Ability to search for references .

2_Skill to argue and narrate. Competence to acquire ability to illustrate the path and choices in an argumentative way.

3_Acquired ability to conceive and describe design choices related to an interior environment.

4_Basic knowledge of the relational dimensions in living spaces

The exam can be taken in FREQUENTING and NON-FREQUENTING modes. For both modes, you must take the lectures, made available on Microsoft Teams, and deliver the exercises digitally.
