OVERVIEW

In the frame of a sociological scientific perspective, the course is set to provide the students with the theoretical tools and the empirical materials necessary to understand migratory processes and their social consequences, in the origin as well as in the destination Countries.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of the course is to provide students with theoretical tools and empirical materials for understanding migration phenomena and their social consequences, both in countries of origin and destination.

At the end of the course, students will be able to know the dynamics of some particular areas of migration processes, including:

- the integration of migrants into the labour market and their transition to self-employment;

- migrant women and transnational families;

- the "second generations";

- the political dimension of the migration phenomenon;

- in-depth analysis of some problematic aspects, including: discrimination and racism; refugees and forced migration.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course is set to provide the students with the sociological tools necessary to study and understand: migratory processes, in their theoretical and empirical dimensions; the main theories about migration; the social transformation brought about by these processes in both origin and destination Countries.

PREREQUISITES

Some general knowledge of sociology is required.

TEACHING METHODS

Frontal teaching, in attendance.

In order to support and integrate textbooks, the teacher will upload teaching materials on Aulaweb.

The course is scheduled in the first semester.

According to the rules about the access to the University premises in order to counter the COVID pandemic diffusion, lectures could be delivered also on the TEAMS platform. TEAMS code will be then available on AulaWeb.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course will start from the description of the general frame of reference for migratory processes, then wil deal with the main social actors emerging from such processes. Their political dimension will be also analyzed, while also the main problematic aspects of migration will be considered.

In more details, among others, it will focus on the following issues:

- migrants in the labour market and their transition to indipendent economic activities;

- female migrants and transnational families;

- “second generations”;

- the political dimensions of migration.
