OVERVIEW

Which is the life cycle of an international cooperation project? The course proved the conceptual framework and tools to understand how actions aimed at reducing (multidimensional) poverty, ensuring sustainable development, and promoting democracy, human rights, and the rule of law across the world are developed.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The Project Cycle Management (PCM) represents the whole of management activities and decision-making procedures used during the life cycle of a project. PCM is a necessary skill in the field of development cooperation. The main aim of the course is to provide students a comprehensive view of Project Cycle Management, highlighting the ways through which the process has been adopted by main international donors, NGOs, UN agencies, European Commission, Minister of foreign affaires, regional actors. The course aims to provide students basic concrete skills of the PCM in the field of development cooperation, from the logical framework to the evaluation of projects.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

In the specific, the course aims to let know and understand to the students the different phases and features of the international cooperation projects life, with particular attention to the European Union strategies. At the same time, students will experience the basic approach concepts of the project cycle as methodology for the design and management of the international cooperation initiatives.

At the end of the course, the student will obtain the ability to apply the knowledge on project design in the international cooperation context. The student will also be able to orient oneself consciously in programming, identification, formulation, management and evaluation of development projects.

PREREQUISITES

The course does not have compulsory attendance, but it is strongly recommended the lessons participation considering the characteristics and methodologies of the lessons (maximum recommended absence of 30% of the module time).

TEACHING METHODS

As an introductory course, the didactic approach will be oriented to practice rather than theory and modeling. During the lessons, students will be offered the opportunity to learn from concrete "case studies" of international cooperation projects (approx. 50% theory and 50% practical exercise).

The presentation of theoretical tools will be alternate with practical exercises conducted in the form of international cooperation project simulation.

The practical exercises could be implemented during the lessons or at home.

  2. Project identification phase: stakeholders and needs
  3. Project identification phase: objectives and strategies
  4. Project formulation phase: logical framework and vertical logic (results chains)
  5. Project formulation phase: horizontal logic (indicators and source of verification)
  6. Implementation phase: workplan and budget
  7. Implementation phase: project management
  8. Implementation and evaluation phase: monitoring, evaluation and audit
  9. Analysis of an EU call for proposals
  10. Analysis of an EU concept note
  11. Analysis of an EU full proposal
  12. Professional expectations in International cooperation

 

Before and during the lessons, soft copy of Power Point presentations and exercise materials in English will be shared with students.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

At the end of the lessons, a verbal examination is provided. The course awards 6 CFU.
The main evaluation parameters will be: capacity to organize fluently the knowledge; critical reasoning skills on the topics; competence int sue of specialized dictionary; quality of the public speaking; capacity to connect different study topics.
