The objective of the course is to provide the theoretical tools that will enable students to understand the logic of microeconomic choices made by economic agents, including in contexts of strategic interaction. In addition, students will be provided with the basic analytical tools necessary to read and understand the contemporary literature in theoretical and applied microeconomics. With this knowledge, students will be able to use economic reasoning to understand the major determinants of decisions by individuals and firms, how markets function, and how they are affected by public policy or changes in economic fundamentals. The knowledge gained in the course is complementary to the data analysis techniques that students will learn in other courses and is key to a proper understanding and interpretation of empirical evidence in a variety of settings (e.g., industrial, health, labor, public economics).
