AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

This course examines the different types of vessel and their structural schemes according to their functional characteristics and construction material. By the end of the course, students will have the ability to represent structural details, as well as the ability to read, interpret and develop a vessel's construction drawings.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The first part of the course serves as an introduction to the naval world as a whole, and aims to equip students with both traditional and modern terminology in the technical and normative fields.

The second part of the course illustrates all the materials used in shipbuilding as well as their experimental characterization tests. During this phase students will also acquire the fundamental criteria for the sizing of simple components, allowing students to be ready to take on the next, more complex structural sizing courses.

The third part of the course analyzes the main structural types of the four materials covered, such as wood, steel, light alluminium alloy and fiberglass. During this phase students will practice and refine their manual drawing abilities, as this skill is still required to quickly and effectively showcase structural solutions to colleagues and workers. These manual sketches will then be developed through CAD techniques learned during the Assisted Design course, which is also held during the first year of studies.
