This course aims to provide students with knowledge of the various characteristics and issues concerning the buoyancy, the equilibrium and the stability of a floating body.
This course provides students with the necessary knowledge and tools to evaluate the geometrical characteristics of the hull and to set up and solve the problem of the balance of the force system consisting of weight and Archimedes' thrust, with a focus on the nature of the equilibrium.
Particularly, the first part of the course is aimed at defining the geometrical elements necessary to solve the problem (surface of the same-volume keel centers and related equations).
The second part of the course is devoted to equilibrium equations and stability analysis.
The third part of the course focuses on particular applications (e.g. loading and unloading a weight, moving a weight, etc.) and on some advanced topics (e.g. meteorological criteria).
