    AIMS AND CONTENT

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

Basic knowledge of chemical equilibria in solution for application to analytical procedures and classical analytical methods based on volume. Learning of practical methods for the accurate carrying out of volumetric analyzes and development of the ability to carry out experiments in the laboratory and to process and present the results.

    AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aims of the coourse are knowledge of basic concepts of Analytical Chemistry, as chemical equilibrium, experimental errors and analytical data processing and evaluation. Further aim is to learn how to carry out laboratory analyses, particularly volumetric analyses.

At the end of the course students will acquire: a) how to solve equilibrium problems, both with mathematical and graphical treatment; b) volumetric analyses theory (titration curves, primary standards and standardization, indicators, experimental conditions influence; c) basic knowledge of data processing end evaluation (experimental errors, accuracy and precision, standard deviation, significance tests); d) the ability to carry out volumetric analyses in the laboratory; e) the skills to process data obtained from their analyses and to evaluate and present them correctly.

    PREREQUISITES

In order to attend lessons and laboratory of this course with good benefits, it is strongly reccommended to have already achieved knowledge of general chemistry and of basic laboratory practice. Students enrolled in Chemistry and Technological Chemistry course must attend all laboratory practice exercise of the General Chemistry Laboratory course before beginning practice exercise lessons.

    TEACHING METHODS

Attendance to lessons its not compulsory, but highly recommended. Attendance to practice exercises is compulsory, as well as those lessons where operative details of practice exercises will be illustrated. At the beginning of the course, the dates of these particular lessons will be notified. A special session will be planned to make up missed practice exercises.

    SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Chemical equilibria: acid-base, complexometric, redox and precipitation equilibria.

Volumetric analysis: basics, titration curves, indicators. Acid-base, complexometric, redox and  precipitation titrations.

Statistical evaluation of chemical data: random and systematic errors, accuracy and precision, standard deviation, confidence interval, signficance tests.

    EXAMS

    EXAM DESCRIPTION

The students who want to be submitted to the exam must registrate at least 5 days in advance on https://servizionline.unige.it/studenti/esami/prenotazione.

The topics are specified in the detailed syllabus publicated on the "aulaweb" service, together with other material (slides, exercises) considered useful.

The exam is essentially oral. However, it will be preceded, on the same day, by a written exam, whose aim is just to filter off the unprepared students. The evaluation of the written exam will permit to be admitted to the oral exam if it is at least sufficient. Good outcomes, together with similar laboratories outcomes, will help to gain a better grade in the oral exam. Detailed rules regarding written exam mode, evaluations and final grade will be published on the “aulaweb” service.

The oral exam will involve questions both on theory and on practice exercises, and the student must demonstrate the achievment of the learning outcomes, both orally and writing formulas, chemical reactions, graphs and short exercises regarding topics of the course. When the commission will judge that the learning oucomes have not been reached, the students will be invited to repeat the exam in one of the subsequent dates. In this case, even the written exam must be repeated.

    ASSESSMENT METHODS

The oral exam is always carried out by two teachers with several years of experience and will last 50-60 minutes. The exam is carried out in order to evaluate not only if  students have achieved the required knowledge, but even if they thoroughly understood them and if they are able to apply them to analytical problems. Being a theoretical and practical course, the commission evaluates also the behaviour of the students during practice exercises, if they are able to carry out analytical procedures in a correct way and to elaborate and present obtained data in written reports.

Therefore, the commission is definitely able to verify with high accuracy if the student has reached or not the learning outcomes.

When the commission will judge that the learning oucomes have not been reached, the students will be invited to repeat the exam in one of the subsequent dates.
