The teaching aims at deepening the concepts of thermodynamics concerning the description, modelling and management of facilities related to the unit operations of chemical industry.
The teaching aims at providing a basic knowledge of the chemical-physical principles and methods that can be used as tools to understand and investigate industrial chemical processes. Therefore, potential applications will be presented for the laws concerning technical thermodynamics, fluid dynamics and heat transmission.
The student will learn how to properly use and combine mass / energy conservation equations with the thermodynamic / kinetic constitutive equations for the design of the most important auxiliary operations in the process industry. The student will acquire the necessary familiarity in the use of tables and graphics about thermodynamic data of the most important substances.
Oral lessons and exercises to the blackboard carried out by the teacher.
Mass , energy and entropy balance in open non-reactive systems. Characteristics, performance and efficiency of industrial equipment. Direct and inverse cycles. Heat pumps. Elements of psychrometry. Moisturing and drying processes. Basic equations of fluid dynamics. Fluid motion in ducts. Distributed and local hydraulic losses. Conductive, convective and radiative heat transfer. Thermal resistances in series and parallel. Heat exchangers.

The exam consists of an oral discussion.
In case of emergency and only according to specific indications by the University of Genoa, the assessment method for the exam might be changed, including the possibility of an online procedure.
The exam aims at checking:
The assessment standards concern the ability to stay on topic, the quality of expression, the logic pattern of the reasoning and the critical reasoning skills.
