You can take the exam for this unit if you passed the following exam(s):
A good understanding of the major colloid and surface phenomena; a first grasp of acknowledged theories and frameworks; a simple approach to some important experimental techniques; a basic knowledge of various industrial applications.
A good mastery of the major principles and laws of physics and physical chemistry
Introduction (colloid and surface physical chemistry) – Intermolecular forces and electric properties of molecules – Interparticle forces: Van der Waals, electrostatic, steric interactions, total interaction free energy, DLVO theory and colloid stability – Colloidal dispersions: preparation methods; kinetic, rheological, electrical properties; coagulation, reversible flocculation; examples of industrial products –Emulsions and foams: preparation and destruction methods; examples of industrial products – Interfacial phenomena: interfacial tension, Laplace equation, contact angle, Young equation; surfactants, surface activity, Gibbs equation, monomolecular films; examples of industrial processes.

The oral exam is always conducted by two teachers of the School and has a duration of about 1 hour.
In this way the commission can verify with high accuracy if the student has reached the learning outcomes.
The depth and coherence of the knowledge of the most important concepts and equations will be evaluated.
Moreover the ability to apply them to simple specific cases will be assessed.
In case of emergency and only according to specific indications by the University of Genoa, the assessment method for the exam might be changed, including the possibility of an online procedure.
