TEACHING MATERIALS | AULAWEB |
This course module will provide the theoretical bases on motion and fluid transport accompanied by examples and practical applications. Develop the ability to team working on practical experiences and to write reports on the laboratory activity.
The course will provide the theoretical basics on
- parameters measuring and process control instruments (pressure, temperature, flow rate, level)
- fluid motion (laminar and turbolent)
- fluid handling (pumps and compressors)
- traditional separation operations (filtration, sedimentation) and not (membrane processes)
accompanied by practical experiments for groups of 3-5 students in order to develop skills in team working experiments and writing reports about laboratory activities.
Lectures and practical experencies
a) Theoretical lessons: Building materials for chemical plants. Mechanical and technological properties of materials. Piping: pipes, joints, flanges, fittings. Valves. Transport of liquids: pumps, compressors. Instrumentation and measurements: flow, temperature, pressure, level. Process control. Membrane separation processes: micro and ultrafiltration, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis.
b) Relevant laboratory activities:
- evaluation of pressure drop through pipes and valves.
- evaluation of the performance of the centrifugal pumps
- separation tests by ultrafiltration and / or reverse osmosis

Oral examination. The exam is conducted by the two professors in charge of the two modules and has a total duration of about 30 minutes. The exam will initially focus on the discussion of the laboratory experiences.
Knowledge of the topics covered in the theoretical lessons, practical skills acquired in the laboratory, quality of laboratory reports. The questions are asked in order to assess whether the student is not only learning the required knowledge but if he is able to apply them to concrete cases and to solution of problems. In this way, both on the basis of the reports drawn up by the student grpuped in teams and the consideration of the exam, the commission is able to asses if the learning objectives have been achieved.
