OVERVIEW

The teaching is divided into two modules: Social Indicators and Transnational Research and Social Innovation and Political Change.

Social indicators and transnational research presents the gnoseological-epistemological foundations of the origin of indicators, as well as their methodological characteristics. An approach will be devoted to the construction and use of social indicators in their broadest sense: indicators on quality of life, well-being, corruption, democracy, poverty, etc.

Social innovation and political change is devoted to the study of social and political change, and focuses in particular on the perspective of social innovation, whose dynamics and actors it investigates. In particular, it will study the transformation of the third sector, the development of social enterprise and the collaborative economy.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The module Social indicators and transnational research aims to introduce the student to comparative research, with references to the main international surveys on welfare, corruption, freedom and poverty. After a first brief introduction to the history of comparative social research and a review of some fundamental methodological aspects, we will analyse the most widespread international indices also from the point of view of their political and social repercussions. At the end of the course, the student will: a) know the gnoseological-epistemological foundations of the origin of social indicators; b) know and know how to face the challenges posed by transnational research; c) develop a critical view of social indicators; d) know their logical-theoretical limits.

The module Social Innovation and Political Change aims to provide students with: the specific skills and tools to define and analyse social innovation, a phenomenon which, according to the sociological perspective adopted, is linked at various levels to political change in contemporary society; an understanding of the most relevant contemporary transformations related to ongoing social change; the ability to apply knowledge and understanding to specific contexts or strategic case studies in order to develop a critical and independent analysis.
