The course examines the determinants of the geopolitical action of states starting from classical theories to arrive at current events also with the analysis of concrete cases of recent conflicts
The course provides the methodologies and tools of geopolitics useful for analysing and understanding the discipline at the time of globalisation. In particular, starting from a historical approach to classical theories, the keys to understanding transversal phenomena (geography, demography, religion ...) that characterise the geopolitical actions of the major institutional players (USA, China, Europe, ...) and others are provided.
At the end of the course, the student will be able to understand the main issues related to Geopolitics and will have acquired a vocabulary that will allow him to orient himself in the literature, being able to easily understand and examine scientific texts relating to the subject. It will therefore be able to interpret current geopolitics in a contingency in which changes in the behavior and strategies of the main world players follow one another with unexpected frequency. It will also be able to explain, argue and sometimes interpret some of the main geopolitical issues both in oral and written form.
Lectures, seminar activities, case analysis carried out also through group work involving the preparation of a written paper and a Power Point presentation.
The course, after dealing with the birth of the discipline and its evolution, goes on to examine
- the main theories and the post-cold war period
- the geopolitical implications of natural and energy resources, of demography and religions, of the economy.
- the geopolitical situation of Italy and of the other main major geographical areas of the world
