OVERVIEW

The Second World War, with its tens of millions of deaths, the extermination camps and the explosion of the atomic bomb, is a true watershed in the history of international relations of the twentieth century. Since 1945, with the defeat of Nazi-fascism, a new page has started in the history of humanity. The course will cover the main events of the twentieth century (Cold War, decolonization, European integration process, globalization, the collapse of the USSR, the rise of China, the clash of civilizations, etc.) until the dawn of the new millennium.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Provide students with the historical skills necessary to understand the dynamics of international politics in the years of the Cold War and in the period following the fall of the Berlin Wall, encourage the development of a critical approach to events and their narration.

TEACHING METHODS

The course includes 18 two-hour lectures; during the lectures slides will be projected, documents distributed, discussions organized. Attending students will also present individual research on lesson topics.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course covers the main topics of the twentieth century: From post-war Reconstruction to the Cold War, from the European integration process to decolonization, the movement of non-aligned to the politics of détente, from the entry of Latin America into world politics to Maoist China and the India of Nehru, from the Iranian revolution to the fall of the Berlin Wall and German reunification, from globalization to the destabilization of the Middle East, to latest environmental and climatic emergencies.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam consists of an oral test, which lasts 20-30 minutes, in order to assess the level of knowledge of the course’s themes acquired by the student. The Commission is chaired by the lecturer.
