The course aims to observe sport as a total social fact. Sport seen as an essential element of culture and therefore analyzed with an anthropological perspective. Actions, narrations, visions, ways of communicating, languages can be observed with a "thick analysis” (Geertz), able to reveal the functioning of the society in question.

The aim of the course is to provide students with the tools to address and investigate various aspects of sports communication, starting from an anthropological perspective. Topics such as the narration of the sporting event will be discussed; football as a "total social fact"; sport as a factor in creating and changing national identities; the cultural hybridization that generates new landscapes.

Oral examination
At the end of the course the student must be able to describe how the anthropological perspective contributes to the analysis of the sporting event; to critically examine the role of journalists as tools for disseminating knowledge; to create original hypotheses about the future of sports communication, in the light of new techniques, new perspectives, new hybridization factors.
