The course deals with the advanced aspects of the use of personal computers, information systems and the network in the digital society. The course illustrates both the essential technical aspects and the tools and systems, and may include an individual project in which the student develops his/her own product at professional and market standards.
The course is developed around web communication and the professional use of IT tools. It includes theoretical topics and a project that students will have to develop, alone or in small groups. The project consists in the development of a thematic website, using state-of-the-art professional tools. The project is a real case on which the theoretical parts to learn are motivated: the network, multimedia coding of documents, security, the cloud and more. Much of this information has a technical content, in a descriptive and non-mathematical form. Basic elements of web-based marketing and social networks are also provided.
Following the Bloom's taxonomy, the student will achieve the following results (levels 2 to 4):
Describe: 1) the fundamentals of how multimedia documents are encoded inside the computer and in the internet, and of the different tools for converting, writing and transmitting documents; 2) the world wide web and principles for designing web-based communication
Apply: state-of-practice design schemes for multimedia communication and for the web
Compare: different tools and techniques for writing, storing, communicating information, in particular for the web
Design and test: a real website for culture, or commerce, or tourism, or similar fields of application.
Basic mathematics and English language.
The course will use the flipped classroom methodology. Aulaweb will be organized in weeks; at the beginning of each week the study texts will be published together with video lessons. On Thursday and / or Friday (in the official time slots) there will be meetings with students to discuss the program published at the beginning of the week. For the system to be effective, students must study the material before each lesson-meeting. During these lessons there will be exercises and discussions in small groups (4 or 5 students), of varying composition
Digital documents, coding, binary numbering, textual and non textual documents, compression (lossless and lossy), website, notions of web and social marketing (blog, website, provider, notifications, push, mobile, tracking). The network: generality, addresses, LANs, services, wireless, localization, cloud, cookies. Security and safety (malware, encription, secure web, digital signature). Multimedia: sound, image and video, lossy compression, standards. Tools for website development.
The study material will be published in Aulaweb.
Office hours: Students having troubles in learning the course concepts can get in touch with the teacher: during classes contacting the teacher through internet, any time, at the following addresses: renato.zaccaria@unige.it (email) renato.zaccaria (skype name) using instant messages through Skype The teacher's office is located in Genova, Viale Causa 13, floor 0.

The exam consists of a theoretical exam, by means of a test in the aulaweb and its discussion. The theoretical exam provides a maximum of 20 points. To this is added a practical exam, in which each student develops a communication and marketing project, using state-of-the-art IT productivity tools. The project provides a maximum of 10 points. Honors may be awarded when both parties deserve a note of excellence.
The exam will verify the ability to describe the fundamentals of how multimedia documents are encoded inside the computer and on the Internet, and of the different tools for converting, writing and transmitting documents; it will also ascertain knowledge of the organization of the world wide web and of the principles for designing web-based communication. It will also ascertain how the student is able to use state-of-the-art design schemes for multimedia communication and for the web, as well as the ability to compare different tools and techniques for writing, storing, communicating information, especially for the web . The project will allow to ascertain the ability to design and implement: a real website (or a mobile app) for culture, or commerce, or tourism, or similar fields of application.
