    OVERVIEW

The "Analysis of drugs II" course is aimed at third year students of the Single Cycle Master's Degree Course in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology (CTF). The course allows the acquirement of 8 credits and consists of theoretical lessons and practical exercises in the laboratory.

    AIMS AND CONTENT

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course deals with the separation of mixtures and the purification of organic substances of pharmaceutical interest, using different methods including chromatography, distillation or crystallization. The isolated substances are subsequently identified through classical qualitative analysis, based on the research of the elements and on the identification of functional groups present in the molecules, followed by the determination of some physical constants, such as melting or boiling point, density, optical rotation. The theoretical lessons are accompanied by practical exercises.

    AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The student will have to acquire the ability to plan and implement qualitative analysis and characterization procedures for identifying drugs or compounds of pharmaceutical interest, featured by an inorganic and organic nature.

    TEACHING METHODS

The teacher will hold the lectures in the classroom with the help of slides that will be made available to students at the end of each topic. Exercises will be introduced by a short illustrative lesson that will be held in the classroom or in the laboratory. The exercises will be individual.

    SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course of 8 CFU (96 hrs of commitment in frontal teaching activity per student) is divided into two parts: a theoretical one, consisting of 32 hours of lessons, and a practical one, which includes 64 hours of individual exercises in the laboratory. The practical exercises performed in the laboratory are carried out in close correlation with the topics of the course, as indicated in the following program.

Syllabus: Chemistry Laboratory Safety Rules. Laboratory risk prevention. Inorganic qualitative analysis for the characterization of inorganic drugs and associated impurities. Assay in bunsen flame and in crucible. Systematic search for the anions of groups I-IV. Systematic search for cations of groups I-VI. Organic qualitative analysis based on the research of the elements and on the identification of functional groups present in compounds of pharmaceutical interest. Preliminary tests: organoleptic test, combustion test, organic elemental analysis, solubility, identification tests. Functional group analysis. Determination of some physical constants, such as melting or boiling point, density, refractive index, optical rotation.
