    OVERVIEW

    Introduction to the evaluation of the patient with respiratory problems through an initial analysis and framing of the main

    symptoms/medical signs of respiratory relevance (e.g. coughing, wheezing, noisy breathing).

    Differential diagnostics regarding a wide array of pathologies, an area in which nurses can provide a highly valuable contribution.

    Iinformation about the most important diseases of the respiratory system, basic concept of aetiology and diagnostics and possible therapeutic programs. 

    AIMS AND CONTENT

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

    To describe pathogenic mechanisms of the diseases affecting different systems as well as specific pathologies, highlighting the diagnostic and therapeutic areas of intervention in which nurses may provide highly relevant contributions.

    AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

    Framing and classification of the patient with symptoms/medical signs of respiratory relevance, starting from the medical history and from the clinical evidence.

    Identification/hypothesis of respiratory disease by watchful monitoring.

    Basic information about the most common paediatric respiratory diseases as well as some of the rare ones.

    Information regarding targeted diagnostic paths and therapeutic programs.  

    TEACHING METHODS

    Traditional lecture style with inclusion of clinical case analysis and  visual aids aimed to stimulate teacher-student interaction.

    SYLLABUS/CONTENT

    Basic respiratory physiopathology in children – Main respiratory symptoms and medical signs (Acute/chronic/recurrent cough and related diagnostic path – Wheezing and its main manifestations: bronchiolitis – Chest pain – Noisy breathing in infants:  stridor, laryngomalacia, ...) – Lower and upper respiratory tract infections – Recurring infections: main causes and initial classification – Lower respiratory tract infection: community acquired pneumonia (CAP)  and its complications -  Bronchiectasis - Asthma: management of acute and chronic episodes, treatment, diagnostics and inhalation therapy.  Primary ciliary dyskinesia,  Alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease and its respiratory manifestations. Tuberculosis. Diagnosis of pulmonary allergic diseases.

    EXAMS

    EXAM DESCRIPTION

    Written exam: multiple choice test.

    Oral exam with joint discussion of written test and analysis/re-evaluation of mistakes, if any.

    Three questions regarding course material (one of which will be chosen by the student) with interactive discussion and questioning aimed at understanding the student’s ability to put what was learned into practice. 

    ASSESSMENT METHODS

    The written test allows to  evaluate the level of knowledge of the course material. The oral test allows to refine this evaluation by taking in account the ability to apply the learned material toward the solution of a specific problem, the ability to communicate and the overall engagement.
