TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB

OVERVIEW

The course includes a theoretical module on materials and clinical-applicative modules on dental materials and prosthetic technologies. It also includes a Medical English module. The theoretical module on dental materials is taught by Prof. Giancarlo Grossi. The clinical-application module on dental materials is taught by Prof. Daniele Pin for the theoretical part (40 hours) and by dr. Cameroni for the practical part. The clinical-applicative module of prosthetic technologies is taught by Prof. Domenico Baldi both for the theoretical part (40 hours) and for the practical part (30 hours). The English module 3 (10 hours) is taught by Prof. Carlo Pesce.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The main topics covered concern: solid state polymers (their classification, obtainment in nature or by synthesis, characterization of chemical-physical properties such as molecular weight, glass transition and tensile strength, plasticization and crystallization phenomenon, belonging class based on the inter-chain cohesive forces); polymers in solution (behavior of polymer molecules in solution, study of the thermodynamics of polymer solutions); Polymeric materials used in the dentistry sector (for prostheses, fillings, impressions and threads for sutures).

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The theoretical module on Materials deals with the chemical-physical characteristics of many polymers, in solid phase and in solution, with particular attention to those used in the medical and, above all, dental fields. The clinical-application module of Dental Materials explains the main characteristics of the materials used in the dental field, how to recognize them and how to use them correctly. The Prosthetic Technologies module provides the knowledge necessary to correctly create both mobile and fixed prostheses. The English 3 module of Prof. Carlo Pesce concerns the clinical aspects of the medical and dental profession: interview with the patient and history collection, objective examination and specific terminology of different specialties.

PREREQUISITES

Basic knowledges of Chemistry, in particular of Organic Chemistry for Materials. Basic knowledges of Chemistry, Physics, and Human Anatomy for the clinican modules. English 1 (B2 general English level) for English 3.

TEACHING METHODS

Formal lectures and practical sessions. Course layout is discussed and agreed upon with the students during the first meeting

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

SYLLABUS

MATERIALS (Grossi)
The main topics covered include the following: (a) solid state polymers with their classification, natural sources or synthetic production, characterization of their chemical-physical properties (molecular weight, glass transition and tensile strength, plasticization and crystallization phenomenon, classification according to on the cohesive forces in the chain); (b) polymers in solution (behavior of polymer molecules in solution, study of the thermodynamics of polymer solutions); and (c) polymeric materials used in dentistry (for prostheses, fillings, impressions, and threads for sutures).

DENTAL MATERIALS (Pin)
Introduction to the course. Dental materials: what they are, their use and their handling. Dental materials: their relationship between with possible biointegration. Classification of Dental Materials by (1) type (laboratory, clinical and clinical-dental technicians); (2) chemical composition; and (3) clinical use. Properties of Dental Materials: physical, chemical, biological, technological, thermal, electrical, and optical.
Plasters: chemistry, training up to products for dental use, uses and commercial compositions, their correct use. Casting coating. Waxes: chemistry, difference between plastic and rigid products, production from animal, vegetable and mineral precursors for dental use, classification according to usage, adoption of commercial products, and their correct handling. Amalgams: history and usage of a disappearing material: the legislature, its origin, chemistry, metallic classification, biocompatibility and possible galvanic effect. How it is handled and used in Dentistry.
Alloys: the great field of metals: chemistry and inclusion in the periodic table of elements, general information, differences and technical characteristics with the study of the crystal lattices of different metals and their transformations. Classification for dental use, dental technician and classification for physical characteristics. Titanium.Definition of crown, bridge, structure, adequate terminology and diversification of metals for ceramic and resin coating. Thicknesses calculation for a prosthetic product. Skeletons: definition, classification and nomenclature, with practical examples.
The "lost wax" technique. Synthetic polymers: The chemistry and the inclusion of the main components in the periodic table, definition, polymerization, their uses in the dental field and subdivision. Introduction to acrylic resins. Impression materials: classification and dental use.
Resins: chemistry, classification, how they are handled in the direct and indirect technique. Their characteristics related to appropriate metals. The sealants. The substrates. Resinous and composite cements. Ceramics: chemical nature, classification of ceramics, sintering, feldspathic ceramics and variants of new generation ceramics. The zirconia structures, the oxidation phenomenon, handling and management of chromatic characteristics. Luting cements, glass ionomers, surgical cements, endodontic cements.

PROSTHETIC TECHNOLOGIES (Baldi)
Introduction to the prosthesis: fixed, mobile, fixed-mobile. The execution:  Design, Execution procedures. Pre-prosthetic evaluation. Definition of chewing and its affecting factors. Fixed Prosthesis: design, clinical crown, dental relationship between the arches, occlusion, mandibular-cranial relationship: Vertical Dimension (VD) at rest, VD at occlusion, free space at rest, minimal phonetic space. Defects and excesses in the VD. Horizontal dimension: mandibular-cranial relationship, central position, maximum interdental space, central occlusion, central relationship. Techniques for recording inter-arch relationships: Dowson, chin point, swallowing or free closure. De-connecting techniques. Analysis and evaluation of clinical cases
Introduction to impressions (through lectures and practical sessions); alginates and how they must be treated to obtain the plaster model (practical sessions). Study models and diagnostic wax-ups. Joint analysis. Occluders, articulators and profile determinants. Analysis of the different types of dental preparation.
