    OVERVIEW

    The course aims to explore the world of sport and its interaction with the society since the first civilizations of Mesopotamia to the contemporary age, in order to understand the educational value of sport in parallel with the socio-cultural context which is inserted in. The course will reflect on the sports’ relationship with politics and will examine the economic implications of contemporary sport.

    AIMS AND CONTENT

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

    The History of Sport, inserted in an introductory learning module to Physical Education, is a necessary prerequisite to open the student’s horizon to the wide world of sports, from the knowledge of the sport as history presents it.

    AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

    • To understand the main issues of the discipline and to follow the events and processes.
    • To interpret critically the data and issues relating to the subject of study and reflection on the main topics, forming independent judgments on them.
    • To communicate, with command of language, information, and issues related to the history of the sport.
    • Acquisition of the main basic tools and the ability to use them so that you can deal autonomously further studies in the subject field and in the professional life.

    TEACHING METHODS

    The lectures will mostly be frontal, but there will be in-depth videos and moments of self-assessment of learning via wooclap in each meeting.

    The modality is in presence.

    SYLLABUS/CONTENT

    The world of sports practice and its interaction with society starting from the first Mesopotamian civilizations up to the contemporary age. In particular, the history of sport will be addressed to:

    • the classical era;
    • the Middle Ages;
    • the modern age;
    • 19th century Europe and the United States;
    • the 20th century, with particular reference to totalitarianisms and the editions of the modern Olympics.

    EXAMS

    EXAM DESCRIPTION

    This course is part of the integrated course “Methods of physical activities - History of Sport – Anthropology”. The exam therefore consists of three parts and includes a multiple-choice quiz for each module. The test, including the three questionnaires, has a total duration of 45 minutes. Each sub-test consists of 15 questions, each of which has a value of 2 points out of thirty. Every single sub-test is passed with 18/30, i.e, with 9 correct answers. The exam is successful if all three tests are sufficient. The final mark is made up of the weighted average of the three partial results.

    ASSESSMENT METHODS

    For the part of History of sport, the questionnaire aims to verify that the student:

    • has understood the main issues of the discipline and knows how to follow the events and processes;
    • know how to interpret the problems inherent in the subject of study;
    • know the information and issues related to the history of sport.
