AIMS AND CONTENT AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The attendance and participation in the planned activities (lectures and in the laboratory) will allow the student to acquire the general knowledge in the field of biological oceanography and data management necessary to examine in depth different problems of the biotic compartment both in the coastal marine environment and the open sea TEACHING METHODS The teaching consists of lectures and laboratory activities. As activities are planned for the application of the acquired knowledge, practical and methodological activities, attendance at lectures and laboratory exercises is strongly recommended. Lectures in the classroom are delivered through multimedia presentations. Laboratory exercises aim to apply the theoretical knowledge aquired during the lectures in the classroom. The lab activities take place in specific classrooms of the DISTAV. SYLLABUS/CONTENT The main contents of the course will concern the study of the interactions between abiotic and biotic factors in coastal and open oceanography, the study of producers, consumers and decomposers and the transfer of energy and matter in the different marine environments. An outline of sampling strategies and of the methods of analysis of the main biological parameters at sea will be provided. Particular attention will be reserved to the Mediterranean basin. RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY All slides used during the lessons and other educational material will be available at the end of each cycle of lectures / laboratory exercises along with other bibliographic material in pdf format. Recommended texts for further information: Lalli & Parsons - Biological Oceanography- Blutterworth Heinemann Cognetti, Sarà, Magazzù - Biologia marina- Calderoni Miller - Biological Oceanography- Blackwell TEACHERS AND EXAM BOARD PAOLO POVERO Ricevimento: Students are received by appointment, arranged directly with the teacher by telephone or by email Exam Board PAOLO POVERO (President) CRISTINA MISIC (President Substitute) LESSONS LESSONS START For lessons start and timetable go to the link: https://easyacademy.unige.it/portalestudenti/ Please check the module Aulaweb page for timetable updates dependent on the sanitary and epidemic situation. Class schedule BIOLOGICAL OCEANOGRAPHY EXAMS EXAM DESCRIPTION The exam consists of a written test. The written test (open and multiple-choice test) is related to the topics and practical activities carried out during the lessons and laboratory exercises. Two exam dates will be available in the winter session (January-February) and four in the summer session (June, July, September). ASSESSMENT METHODS Details on how to prepare for the exam and the degree of the required detail for each topic will be provided at the beginning of the course and confirmed during lectures and exercises. The student must be able to integrate the knowledge acquired during the lectures with the skills acquired during the workshop activities in specific cases treated during the course.
