    OVERVIEW

    The Environmental Hygiene course aims to provide students with the concepts of hygiene in environmental matters in order to better implement the activities aimed to the protection of the environment and human health.

    AIMS AND CONTENT

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

    The course aims to analyse the relationships between environment and health and the problems of microbiological and chemical pollution of environmental matrices (air, water and water). It provides students with the skills to assess the effects of pollutants on ecosystems and humans and to implement appropriate preventive measures to maintain the state of health of humans and the environment.

    AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

    The student will acquire adequate knowledge and skills to understand the relationship between man and the environment, the role of environmental risk factors and the quality of environmental matrices in determining the health of populations.
    The student will acquire the ability to illustrate critically and in appropriate language the data obtained in a multidisciplinary professional context.
    The student during the Laboratory training credit used for outings and technical visits will have the opportunity to get in touch with different realities closely related to possible future job opportunities.

    TEACHING METHODS

    The teaching consists of frontal lessons and laboratory activities. Attendance is also recommended because at the end of each main topic will be treated in the classroom case-study to better understand what is explained.

    SYLLABUS/CONTENT

    The course syllabus includes the presentation and discussion of the following topics:
    ENVIRONMENT AND HUMAN HEALTH. Relationships between the physical, biological, social and human health environments.
    SOIL: imprtance of the soil for man health. Sanitary reflections of soil pollution. Focus on particular pollutants
    URBAN SOLID WASTE: Current regulations, management and health reflexes.
    WATER. Water for human consumption: Hygienic problems related to the human use of water. Water in nature and the various sources of supply. The microbiological and chemical parameters indicated in the current legislation  for the judgement of potability. Guidelines for the quality of water intended for human consumption. Definition of quality standards and methods for their evaluation. Potability requirements. Judgement and control of the potability of a water. Analysis and correction of the chemical, physical, organoleptic and biological characteristics of water. Methods of potabilization. Hygienic problems related to drinking water processes.
    Bathing water: The microbiological and chemical parameters indicated in the current legislation for bathing water. Definition of quality standards and methods for their evaluation.
    ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTION: Effects of air pollution on human health. Legislation. Hygiene and health problems.

    ASSESSMENT METHODS

    Details on how to prepare for the exam and the level of detail required will be provided at the beginning of the course and confirmed during lessons.

    The oral examination will mainly focus on the deepening of topics covered during the lectures and will aim to assess the achievement of the appropriate level of knowledge, the ability to use theoretical knowledge for critical analysis. The ability to present the topics in a clear and correct terminology will also be evaluated.
