The course aims to provide the fundamental knowledge on the evolution, characteristics and geologic values of Liguria, in the frame of the geologic context of the Western Mediterranean area and of the geologic history of the Earth.
The attendance and participation in the planned training activities (lectures and field trips) will allow the student to acquire knowledge on the geological structure of the Ligurian territory.
Specifically, the student will be able to:
• describe the main geological cycles
• evaluate a lithostratigraphic succession
• discriminate the paleogeographic domains
• distinguish the constituent elements of the geology of Liguria
The course consists of frontal/online lessons and fieldwork. Attendance to all planned activities is strongly recommended.
Lectures in the classroom are done through multimedia presentations.
The field trips take place between Piedmont and Liguria, aimed at recognizing the paleogeographic domains presented in the classroom and identifying their stratigraphic and structural features.
Evolving Continents. Liguria in the Africa-Europe geologic contex. The major stratigraphic and structural features of the palaeogeographic domain involved in the Ligurian Alps and Ligurian-Emilian Apennines. The major stratigraphic and structural features of the late- and post-orogenic domains. An overview of the tectonic history of the Ligurian Alps and Northern Apennines. Field trips.

The exam is integrated with the Georisorse module. For a detailed description of the modalities of the examination, please refer to the course description (Regional Geology and GeoSources - code 95064).
The oral test will focus on the topics covered during the lectures and the fieldwork. It will aim to assess not only if the student has achieved an adequate level of knowledge, but also if he has acquired the ability to integrate the received notions. The ability to expose the arguments clearly and with correct terminology will also be evaluated.
