The aim of the course in Naval Ship Design is to provide students with the basis for an understanding of the specific design problems of navy surface ships and submarines. The course is one of the elective courses for students of the MSc in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, and the lessons are scheduled in the second semester.
The course aims to teach the basic notions for the design of naval vessels. It also aims to integrate the knowledge acquired in the previous courses and addresses the design issues according to the technological evolution of the sector.
The course covers all phases of the design of a navy ship. During the semester, students will learn how to apply their knowledge of of naval architecture, marine structures, ship propulsion and machinery, in the various phases of the design spiral, by means of theoretical lessons and practical exercises with high design characterisation. A specific module will address the peculiar aspects of the design of conventional underwater units. The teaching will be supplemented by lectures by professionals in the sector and/or instructional visits to shipyards or to Italian Navy units.
At the end of the course the student:
Due to the holistic nature of teaching in its approach to the ship as a whole, it is necessary to have strong skills in naval architecture and marine engineering subjects such as naval architecture, ship stability, shipbuilding, ship propulsion and machinery.
The course includes lectures and practical project exercises aimed at enhancing students' problem-solving skills. Particular attention is given to debriefing and discussion of the exercises.
The teaching programme touches on all the main points of the design spiral:
The course also includes a 10-hour module on submarines:
The course content is supplemented with contributions from industry:
Office hours: Office hours on request, either in presence or via MS TEAMS. please contact the professor via e-mail or MS TEAMS chat.
