    OVERVIEW

Having defined the cultural context in which growing attention to environmental sustainability has developed  and the underlying reasons that can lead architects to consider the ecological approach to design, the course intends to provide a framework of the possible bioclimatic strategies for the design of buildings. open and confined spaces.
The course also intends to provide a multidisciplinary study on the theme of the use of Nature Based Solutions in the urban environment, through the study of systems for the integration of vegetation in architecture and the use of natural elements for the control of environmental, ecological and micro-climatic conditions of open spaces and buildings.

    AIMS AND CONTENT

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course intends to offer a general overview about the complex ecological approach to urban planning and architectural design, offering starting point to deepen the many subjects involved.

    AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course intends to offer a general overview about the complex ecological approach to urban planning and architectural design, offering starting point to deepen the many subjects involved.

The course’s objective is to provide basic knowledge on the evolution of the environmental Issue in its various components – depletion of limited resources, pollution, use of renewable energy sources – and its consequences on land management, architectural design and building process. In the second part of the course, the objective is to deepen the knowledge on materials and passive and active technologies aimed at improving the environmental quality in architecture.

    TEACHING METHODS

The course includes lectures even with the intervention of external experts to present the cultural context, the possible strategies for sustainable design, case studies and products.

    SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course faces the subject of sustainable design, considering the different scales of the project – territorial, urban, architectural and that of building materials –, presenting case studies, strategies of analysis, technologies and methods.

The following topics will be covered: the general meaning of sustainable development until the ecological approach adopted in environmental design; the historical evolution of ecological design; energy saving policies; procedures of Environmental Impact Assessment and Strategic Environmental Assessment; sustainable planning at territorial scale; sustainable tourism; interrelationships between environmental-bioclimatic analysis of a site and sustainable planning; environmental analysis; bioclimatic analysis; the use of water in the natural climate control; strategies of water recycling and phitodepuration; the use of natural elements (vegetation) in the natural climate control of a site; the basic principles of passive solar heating; passive solar systems; active solar systems, solar thermal energy and photovoltaic energy systems; natural lighting; use of glass; sun protections; "intelligent buildings"; thermical insulation; hyper-insulation systems, supplementary plant design and installation to the solar passive systems; sustainable requalification of existing buildings; simplified calculation systems and software; energy balance of sustainable design management; green building site management; principles of bioarchitecture; use of “natural” materials - in particular, wood constructions -; recycled material. Some lectures will be given by experts. Some exercises will be carried out.

    RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

A bibliography for all the topics will be provided  including specific information on aulaweb.

    EXAMS

    EXAM DESCRIPTION

The final exam foresees the verification of students’ knowledge, in theoretical-methodological and applied terms. The exam is related to the topics of lessons and complies with the presented course schedule.
