The course provides the basics of structural mechanics and their translation in the design of actual constructions at least for simple static schemes
The course aims to provide the basis for the structural verification of mechanical systems with particular regard to industrial and civil applications.
At the end of the course, students will be able to represent the most common structural systems according to simple static models, to represent actions on structures, to solve simple static schemes, to evaluate the stress and strain , to carry out the structural verifications.
The teaching method consists of lectures and classroom exercises in which exercises and numerical applications will be carried out.
Student have the opportunity to take a written test of self-assessment in itinere, structured in a similar way to the final written exam, but limited to the program carried out, with subsequent correction.
To help the student in learning, the teacher puts all the texts of the written tests on the portal of the University "Aula Web", together with the proposed solution.
Static and kinematic analysis of the rigid body, the problem of plane beam. Determination of constraint reactions and internal forces. Mechanical behavior of materials: stress and strain of beams subjected to axial actions, bending moments, shear and torsion. Solution of simple isostatic problems. Deformable beam: equation of the elastica equations, solutions of some simple hyperstatic schemes. Notes on the instability of equilibrium.

The exam consists of a written test and an oral interview.
The written test precedes the oral interview of one week / ten days or so. It consists in the solution of an isostatic truss, with the representation of the internal forces and the qualitative deformation, the estimation of the strain and stress for the structural verifications or the design.
If the students have passed the test in itinere, this is considered a substitute for the written test.
To access the oral exam, students must have passed the written test or the test in itinere, with a minimum grade of 16/30. This grade will be used in the final evaluation by averaging with the oral exam.
There will be 2 exam sessions available for the winter session (January-February) and 3 sessions for the summer session (June,
July and September). No extraordinary exam sessions will be granted outside the indicated periods.
The written exam will verify the effective ability to deal with the engineering study of a structural system.
The oral examination will focus mainly on the topics covered during the lectures and will have the purpose to evaluate not only if the student has reached an adequate level of knowledge, but if he has acquired the ability to critically analyze the simple structural systems in the light of the models and of the studied schemes.
Students will be asked to set up an engineering model of a structural system of a case study, to solve a simple static scheme, to evaluate stress and strain, to carry out structural verifications.
