CREDITS
  • 2 cfu during the 2nd year of 9022 SCIENZE GEOLOGICHE (LM-74) - GENOVA
  • SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR GEO/03
    TEACHING LOCATION
  • GENOVA
  • SEMESTER 1° Semester
    TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB

    OVERVIEW

The course will provide an outline of the geological features of the polar regions of the Earth (i.e.; Antarctica and Arctic). Students will get an overview of the main geological research activities and methods applied for the study of remote areas, as well as a glimpse about explorations and scientific expeditions.

    AIMS AND CONTENT

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course provides the basic knowledge of the geological features of the Polar Regions of the Earth - Antarctica and Artic. Lectures will focus on the geology, geodynamics, the interactions between lithosphere and cryosphere and relationships with climate change. Students will get also an overview of the main geological methods applied for the study of remote areas, research activities and scientific expeditions.

    AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Students will acquire knowledge about the polar regions concerning: - physiography, geodynamics and geology of the polar regions; main geological provinces and lithological features of Antarctica and Arctic; inreaction processes between lithosphere and cryosphere; exploration and scientific research expeditions; main geological methods of investigation applied in remote areas.

    PREREQUISITES

Basic knowledge of geology and geography.

    TEACHING METHODS

The teaching activity is organised in lectures and seminars. Lectures are delivered through multimedia presentations.

    EXAMS

    EXAM DESCRIPTION

Students will be evaluated by an oral presentation of a small research project or an oral examination that consists of questions related to the topics discussed during lectures and seminars.

    ASSESSMENT METHODS

The purpose of the oral examination will be to verify if the student has acquired an adequate level of knowledge of the arguments of the course.  The ability of the student to discuss properly the arguments and to use an appropriate terminology will also be evaluated.

    FURTHER INFORMATION

Although attending the course is not mandatory, it is highly recommended to join the classes.
