    OVERVIEW

    The course provides knowledge useful to design interventions of maintenance, modification and reuse of existing architecture, of ancient and recent formation, with particular emphasis on the construction aspects and executive details. Starting from the detailed knowledge of the construction methods, the problems arising from conditions of degradation, deficit and instability and the demands of new quality, architectural, reuse and saving of energy resources are addressed. At the end of the course, students are able to develop, up to the executive detail of some parts, a project of conservation / modification / reuse. The teaching consists of two modules: Traditional Masonry Buildings, on traditional buildings and even offered to students of the CdLM Engineering for Building Retrofitting, and Rehabilitation and Reuse of Recent Heritage, focusing on issues related to interventions on 20th century Heritage, recognition of architectural values and durability.

    AIMS AND CONTENT

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

    The course, of theoretical-methodological character, is inserted in the formative offer dedicated to the intervention on the existing Heritage, recognized of interest under the Code of the Cultural Goods and not. The teaching is in fact proposed as a deepening for the Laboratory of design for the restoration and enhancement of Cultural Heritage but is offered as a free choice for other paths: The teaching deepens specialized knowledge necessary to set correctly and responsibly a project of recovery and reuse, starting from the understanding of construction methods, structural concepts, the main phenomena of degradation, instability and functional deficit of existing buildings, with reference to environmental issues and energy saving, as well as architectural values still in place.

    EXAMS

    EXAM DESCRIPTION

    The exam modalities vary for the students of the Master of Science in Architecture, who take it in Italian, and for the students of the Master of Science in Engineering for Bulding Retroffiting, who take the exam in English only for the first module (Traditional Masonry Buildings). The verification of learning takes place with a final oral exam, based on the topics covered in class and the bibliography available on aulaweb. Please refer to what is specified in the single modules.

    ASSESSMENT METHODS

    The oral exam allows to verify:

    • the student's ability to analyse, understand and evaluate the qualities and problems affecting existing architecture, ancient or newly built by relating causes, concurrences and effects;
    • the ability to correctly set up projects of renovation, refurnishment and reuse with particular attention to technical interventions (maintenance, consolidation, restoration, adaptation, improvement...).

    The oral exposition must be accompanied by simple graphic elaborations that help the student to demonstrate the acquisition of technical knowledge and the ability to hierarchize problems and identify coherent solutions. The following are parameters for the evaluation of the exam: the ability to set up a critical reasoning, the property of technical vocabulary, the quality of exposition of the topics covered.
