The lessons, of a distinctly methodological nature, will revolve around a series of exemplary cases, read and interpreted starting from the main points of the contemporary historical-architectural debate. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the course the student will know the issues and concepts discussed during the lessons: the cultural coordinates of architectural projects; the political, social and identity dimension of building processes; the notion of cultural heritage and its reflections on architecture; the importance of historical contexts and the limits of ‘operational criticism’ (critica operativa); the method and tools of architectural history. TEACHING METHODS Lectures. Attendance of lessons is not mandatory, but strongly recommended. SYLLABUS/CONTENT The urban contexts of contemporary architecture: the legacy of the industrial city; old and new patterns of development; trends of global change and models of resilience The legacy of modernism History of architecture as an autonomous discipline: the legacy of national traditions, the specificity of the ‘Italian school’, the new trends of international historiography The ‘controversial city’ and the debate about town planning and urban renewal after WW2 Architecture, identities and cultural heritage in an historical perspective RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY Given the approach of the course, there isn’t a single handbook that can substitute class attendance. ASSESSMENT METHODS The notes taken during the lessons as well as the slides available on aul@web will be useful but not entirely sufficient to prepare for the exam, and will need to be supplemented by the critical study of one of the books indicated in class.
