OVERVIEW

Health Economics aims to provide informative tools to make difficult decisions in such a delicate and important context as that of health.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

This course provides an introduction to the central issues in health economics and health policy. Students will improve their understanding of and skills in the field of health economics (health policy, health programmes evaluation, health care market regulation)

 

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims at providing students with basic economic concepts to understand health care market and the role played by asymmetric information in affecting market equilibrium. Students will learn how to apply economic analysis to evaluate public and private policies.

  • Basic economic concepts
  • Introduction to health economics:
    • general principles and theoretical approach
    • characteristics of "health" as a "good"
  • Economic analysis of (national) health care services and insurance systems
  • Information asymmetry: adverse selection and moral hazard, incomplete contracts, incentives, uncertainty and risk
  • Methods for economic evaluation of health sector and health policies

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

The course is structured around teacher’s handouts and original papers, which will be made
available by aulaweb.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

An important element of the course is the two (written) intermediate tests that form the continuous
assessment element, one in the middle and one at the end of the course. They will also provide
feedback on the development of the student's understanding.
Alternatively, students are assessed in (written) final examinations.
Attendance to the course is not required and there is no difference between attending and nonattending
students.
Students are free to choose whether to be assessed in English or Italian
