During the course two problems relative to the mechanics of biological tissue (prof. Rodolfo Repetto) and to the mechanics of sensory systems. Under the guidance of the teachers, students will formulate appropriate mathematical models to describe the problems proposed. Theoretical notions necessary to write the mathematical models will be provided during the course. The solution of the mathematical problems will be carried out analytically (if possible) and numerically. The necessary numerical techniques will be introduced during the course. Each problem will be faced with a step by step approach, starting from very simple models and then progressively complicating the picture. The majority of the work on the projects will be carried out during class hours.
Provide the students with basic notions of mechanics of biological tissue and sensory systems and teach them how to formulate appropriate mathematical models. Provide notions of numerical analysis to find numerical solutions of the mathematical problems. Encourage the students to work independently on a new project and teach them how to find and study the existing scientific literature.
At the end of the course the students will be able to understand, formulate and solve simple (yet relevant) problems relative to the mechanics of biological tissue. Students will be able to appreciate the importance of mechanics in the field of bioengineering. Students will write a scientific report about their work.
Basic notions of mechanics and applied mathematics. If some students will have specific lacks of knowledge the teachers will be happy to provide them with some additional specific lectures (as it has often happened in the past).
