OVERVIEW

Hydrology module

The module introduces the concepts of the hydrological cycle and of the transformation of inflows and flows in order to allow learners to be able to evaluate the response to meteorological events for different territories and land uses. The data analysis for the estimation of the probability of occurrence of rain events focuses on the extremes, ie flood events and drought phenomena.

Hydraulic Construction Module

The course aims to provide the elements necessary for the design and the management of fundamental elements in the hydraulic construction sector, with particular attention to the typically engineering-design aspects.

AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

General description of physical phenomenon that influence the hydrology and the statistical methodology applied to hydrological analysis. The principal concept of the hydrological cycle.

Model applied to analysis the rainfall data. Description of methods applied in the analysis of extreme and short events of rainfall. Model to define the pluviometry possibility curves. Identification of  Istantaneous Unit Hydrograh, estimation of flood duration curve. Main steps in the management of water resources.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course  introduces  the principal  notions on hydrology and the statistical methodology applied to hydrological analysis. The principal concepts relevant to the hydrological cycle.

Description of the principal topographic and geomorphological characteristic used in the hydrological studies.

Models applied to analysis the rainfall data. Description of the principal methods applied in the analysis of extreme and short rainfall events.

The more utilized models to define the Pluviometric Possibility Curves. Identification of  the Istantaneous Unit Hydrograh; estimate of Flood Duration Curve.

The main steps in the management of water resources.

Hydraulic Construction Module:

Essential contents: Free surface currents: steady and uniform currents; the possible currents states; localized phenomena. Capture and derivation elements: typology, structural elements, project flow rates. The examined elements will be mountain sockets, sleepers, degravelers and derivative channels, free surface derivation, complementary and control works. Accumulation works: reservoirs and dams. Structural and geotechnical characteristics will be examined with hints relating to gravity and arch dams. In relation to these, the design elements of the profile of the overflowing dams and of the devices for the dissipation of energy will be examined. Accessory components: functionality and design of the intake, bottom and surface drainage works. Constituent elements of hydroelectric plants.
