The course proposes an practical application of typical automation concepts and components. A test setup is the base for and experimentation based on a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC),sensors and an industrial communication BUS.
Ability to integrate measurements and sensors in an automation system, based on a a programmable logic controller.
Ability to identify problems in practical sensors applications, and their calibration. Comprehension of main PLC characteristics and ability to select a device given a specific application.
Basic PLC programming capacity using Ladder and Structured text languages, including routines for BUS communication.
Elements of measurements and informatics will be useful for this course.
Lectures regarding basic theory of operation of automation devices, sensors, communication systems and other devices included in the experimental setup.
Laboratory activity with guided development of simple applications. Final project development in small groups of students.
Historical PLC introduction; PLC working cycle; PLC interface with sensors and actuators; IEC 61131 programming languages and structure.
Ladder and structured text programming, State machine architecture
Measurement chains for position and force measurements in automation. Sensors calibration.
ISO-OSI BUS structure; BUS communication with an actuator.
Application to an automation project on a laboratory test setup with PLC sensors, and linear positioner.
Instructor will provide students with proper study material, including lectures presentations and technical material such as data sheets and manuals.

All class schedules are posted on the EasyAcademy portal.
The exam consist in two parts:
Realization of an automation project to be developed in small students groups, with a project report to be delivered before the oral part
An oral discussion based on the project report and an open discussion on a course topic.
The evaluation considers the capacity to implement concepts in a practical application. The ability to write a synthetic but comprehensive and clear report. The comprehension of main automation concepts given in the course.
