OVERVIEW

The module aims at providing the basic elements of logistics and integrated inventory management techniques as well as to develop and use logical-mathematical models for the analysis, and the optimal planning and management of logistics systems. Software tools will be used to solve problems related to facility location, inventory management, and supply chain.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The module aims at providing the basic elements of logistics and integrated inventory management techniques as well as to develop and to use logical-mathematical models for the analysis and the planning of logistics systems.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The main objective of the course is that of introducing the basic concepts regarding the planning and management of logistic systems. In particular, the students will learn how to face problems related to facility location, inventory, supply chain, and routing.  A particular emphasis is given to the formalization of decision problems as mathematical programming problems. In this framework, the student will acquire the capability of selecting the most suitable model for the system, identifying the key decisional variables, and defining an appropraite objective function to optimize. The student is also encouraged to develop  a critical attitude to analyze the obtained results; to this aim, software tools able to model and manage the studied logistic systems will be used.

PREREQUISITES

No prerequisites.

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures in classroom. Computer exercises (under the assistance of the teacher).

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course will be characterized by the presentation and discussion of the following topica

- Introduction to the basic concepts of logistics;

- Demand forecasting;

- Facility location (both for public and private sectors);

- Warehouse management;

- Integrated supply chain management and optimization;

- Routing problems.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam is only oral. It includes a discussion of the reports of the computer exercises. Besides, specific questions about the various topics treated in the lectures  will be proposed to the students. Moreover, students should be able to define decision variables, parameters, objective function and constraints, with specific reference to the decision problems present in the training material (lecture notes, slides) and presented during lectures.

Students with learning disorders ("Disturbi Specifici di Apprendimento", DSA) will be allowed to use specific modalities and supports that will be determined on a case-by-case basis in agreement with the delegate of the Engineering courses in the Committee for the Inclusion of Students with Disabilities

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The assessment is based on the evaluation of the capability of the student to solve and formalize new problems and to use the methods and tools presented during the lectures and the computer exercises.
