The goal of this course is that of developing and applying modeling and optimization tools to solve problems dealing with performance analysis and optimization of traffic networks. Different classes of dynamic models of traffic networks will be presented, based on various assumptions about the architecture for information exchange among the decision makers. Real time control problems are considered and possible control schemes are presented. The application of such schemes is discussed also with respect to the computational requirements and the needs for communication.
The objective of this course is that of providing the student with the conceptual and methodological tools necessary to model vehicle traffic systems and to define and solve control problems for these systems. In particular, at the end of the course, the student will be able to understand the nature of the different models that can be adopted and to select the most suitable model for any specific case study. Besides, the student will learn how to define performance optimization and real-time control problems, to be solved by applying specific software tools.
Lessons and computer exercises in the classroom.
Macroscopic traffic models for a single link. Models continuous in time and space. Discrete-time models. Traffic network models. Traffic network control problems. Decentralized control. Second order models (basic concepts).
The notes of the course will be made available to the students. They will include several bibliographical references.
Office hours: It is possible to meet the professor, on request, at different times.
All class schedules are posted on the EasyAcademy portal.
Oral exam, that may include a discusssion of the reports about the computer exercises.
The exam has the objective of checking and evaluating the capability of the student to solve modelling and control problems for traffic systems, analogous to those presented during the lessons and solved within the computer exercises.
The exam will also test the acquisition of the basic concepts and methods provided by the course.
Students with learning disorders ("disturbi specifici di apprendimento", DSA) will be allowed to use specific modalities and supports that will be determined on a case-by-case basis in agreement with the delegate of the Engineering courses in the Committee for the Inclusion of Students with Disabilities
